Quick answer

The cruise boards at the dock beside Salmon Street Springs in Tom McCall Waterfront Park, 1010 SW Naito Parkway. Arrive 30 minutes before departure with photo ID, and wear business casual or dressy casual with flat, non-slip shoes. The nearest MAX stop is SW 1st & Yamhill, on the Red and Blue lines. Sunset runs from about 4:30 pm in late December to about 9 pm in late June, which decides how much daylight your sailing has.

Finding the dock

Most public cruises board at the Salmon Springs Dock, 1010 SW Naito Parkway, beside the Salmon Street Springs fountain in Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The dock sits on the park's river edge just north of the Hawthorne Bridge. The operator can change the boarding location and the boat, and some cruises leave from Caruthers Landing at 110 SE Caruthers Street, so read the address on your booking confirmation. Arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. The fountain makes the dock easy to spot: it is an interactive fountain with three computer-controlled water displays, dedicated in 1988.

Getting there by MAX

The closest MAX light rail stop is SW 1st & Yamhill, served by the Red and Blue lines. The Red Line connects Portland International Airport with the city centre, and the Blue Line runs between Hillsboro and Gresham through downtown. From the stop it is a short walk toward the river and the park. MAX trains run every 15 minutes or less most of the day, every day, but buses cover late-night and early-morning service, so check the last train before an evening sailing. TriMet runs five MAX lines, and the Red Line is the one that links the airport with downtown.

Parking

The operator lists garages and street spaces for the Salmon Springs Dock, not a lot. It suggests the World Trade Center garage at 56 SW Taylor Street, which has 6 ft 4 in clearance, or the Smart Park garages at SW 1st & Jefferson and SW 4th & Yamhill. Metered street parking is on SW Naito Parkway southbound, SW Salmon Street eastbound and SW Taylor Street westbound, paid through the Parking Kitty app. One disability space sits beside the Rose Festival Foundation office, entered from Naito Parkway northbound. Caruthers Landing has a free lot, with room for about 100 vehicles, on a first come, first served basis.

Boarding, step by step

Public cruises start boarding 30 minutes before departure. The captain and crew greet you at the dock, and check-in happens at the bottom of the ramp. Your party can check in under the last name the booking was made under. Guests 18 and older carry photo identification, and the crew takes a boarding photo of everyone who steps aboard, because the vessels are regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Buying the printed photo at the end is optional, and guests who are uncomfortable with the photograph can ask the photographer to destroy the printed copy. All carry-on bags are subject to inspection.

  • Arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled departure
  • Check in at the bottom of the ramp
  • Carry photo ID if you are 18 or older
  • Expect a boarding photo; the printed copy is optional

What to wear

The operator recommends business casual or dressy casual for meal cruises, with solid, non-slip shoes rather than thin heels, because the deck is a marine surface. Wear layers. The Portland Spirit, the Willamette Star and the Crystal Dolphin all have enclosed, climate-controlled dining decks, but the outer decks are only partly covered and the river is cooler than the street, even in summer. Guests describe the outer decks as breezy and chilly in the evening, so a jacket or wrap earns its place in the bag. Sightseeing cruises call for casual clothes, but the meal cruises sit a step above that.

When the light is best

A dinner sailing that leaves two hours before sunset ends about half an hour after it, which gives you daylight on the way out and the city lights on the way back. In midwinter, when the sun sets by about 4:30 pm, every dinner sailing runs mostly in the dark. Departure times show when you pick a date, so compare them with the sunset times below. The upstream half of the route passes parks, clubs and marinas, so the skyline and the lit bridges on the return leg are the main show after dark.

Weather and the best season

Portland summers are warm, dry and sunny from mid-June to early September, which makes that stretch the most dependable for daylight and dry decks. Spring and fall vary, and overcast skies are most common from mid-fall into mid-spring. The operator cruises in rain and other bad weather, and it contacts guests at least two hours ahead if ice or heavy snow forces a cancellation. Because the boat sails in the rain, the enclosed decks matter more than the forecast. Measurable rain falls on about 157 days a year, often as a light drizzle that lasts several days.

What to bring, and what to leave

Bring a passport or ID card and your booking confirmation. Headphones are useful: you can listen to the historical narration at your table through the Listen Everywhere app, though it is not available on the Willamette Star or the Crystal Dolphin. Printed and large-print narration guides can be borrowed, and guests without a smartphone can ask for a narration iPod, subject to availability. Pets, apart from service dogs, are not allowed, and neither is smoking of any kind, including vaping. Weapons are prohibited on the vessels, and outside food and drink are not permitted.

Before you board

Allow a few minutes to look around the park. Tom McCall Waterfront Park runs along the river's west bank in downtown Portland, and Salmon Street Springs, the interactive fountain beside the dock, is open from 6 am to 10 pm in spring, summer and fall. Its computer-controlled jets can recycle up to 4,924 US gallons of water a minute. Arriving the full 30 minutes early leaves time for a short walk along the seawall path before boarding opens. The Hawthorne Bridge, just upstream, is the first bridge the boat reaches on the way out.

Who this isn't for

If you need a parking space at the dock, plan on a garage a few blocks away or take MAX instead. If you use a wheelchair or walker, read the access notes before booking: the ramp can be steep, particularly in summer, and the bow and observation deck on the Portland Spirit are reachable only by stairs. And if you want to see the river in daylight during winter, a dinner sailing will not give you that; the lunch cruise will. Guests who rely on printed narration can borrow a large-print edition on board.
